A24 has premiered the second trailer for “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” filmmaker Ari Aster’s new Western-noir dark political comedy film “Eddington”.

Set during the pandemic, the ensemble film centers on primarily on the rivalry between Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal).

The conflict begins when Joe refuses to wear a face mask at a local grocery store which leads him to run for mayor of the New Mexico town of Eddington, challenging Ted who thought he would run unopposed.

The film doesn’t shy away from politics and is described as quite violent. Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr. also star in the film which was shot in New Mexico.

Aster writes, directs, and produces with Lars Knudsen for Square Peg. Oscar-winning cinematographer Darius Khondji handling the visuals while Bobby Krlic will compose the film’s score.

“Eddington” opens exclusively in cinemas on July 18th.
