Many Outposters could be tempted to agree with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos as he once again talked down the theatrical experience. Outposters of a certain age know that, while their love of movies was born in the cinema, it was sharpened to a fine edge by the electric box of dreams that was the VCR. Home entertainment has been a constant for us.

Back then, many commentators predicted the death of the cinematic experience. It didn’t happen. If anything, home entertainment helped support a second “Golden Age” of cinema. Then COVID happened, theaters were shuttered, release windows shrunk, and even for Outposters the multiple trips to the theater over the summer movie season seemed to fade to just a memory.

Most of the commentary in the Disqus seems to reflect this. Many Outposters comment frequently that they simply don’t get out to the movies much these days, and they do most of their viewing at home.

Sarandos was always vocal about the clarity behind their business model and that theatrical had no place in it outside of qualifying awards runs. He has doubled down again at a TIME100 Summit this week, as reported in Deadline, where he restated their mission:

“A very consumer-focused company. We deliver the program to you in a way you want to watch it.”

He seemingly had few tears to shed about the declining box office:

“What is the consumer trying to tell us? That they’d like to watch movies at home.”

On theaters themselves, he said:

“I believe it is an outmoded idea, for most people, not for everybody.”

Finally, does he care that his company could be a driving force in destroying Hollywood?

“No, we’re saving Hollywood.”

Well, that’s us told!
