Matthew Vaughn’s action-comedy Argylle is struggling. The reviews were not kind, with 35% with critics and 65% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. These woes have carried through into the box office.

Argylle pulled in $5.6 million on Friday for an estimated opening of $16.5 million for the weekend. In overseas markets, it’s the same story with another $16.9 million. $33.4 overall doesn’t seem too bad, but the reports say Argylle cost $200 million. That makes these numbers a disaster.

This is another Apple movie that has struggled versus a huge budget, with Killers of The Flower Moon and Napoleon both looking unlikely to turn a profit from the box office alone. Argylle also has Universal in the mix as a distributor.

Vaughn had frequently talked about developing further adventures with these characters. That is now unlikely to happen unless Apple’s deep pockets mean they don’t mind.

A quiet box office overall saw second place taken by the fourth installment Angel Studios’ Christian-themed series The Chosen. The series stars Jonathan Roumie as Jesus and has been a crowdfunded streaming success since 2017. This season was released in theaters and pulled in $6.1 million.

In third place was Jason Statham’s actioner The Beekeeper with $5.3million.

There is now little blockbuster potential until Dune Part Two next month.
