Ahh, Amazon Prime Video! Many, many years ago there were movies that would mostly get their legs on VHS home rental. Our insatiable appetites for home viewing, as little Outposters, meant we would simply eat up just about everything that crossed our paths. If we hadn’t seen it, regardless of quality, it got rented and watched. Sometimes it feels as if Amazon is keeping this feeling alive with things like Heads Of State.

Movies which, in the current movie theater environment, wouldn’t get much of a run and would probably cost more to market and distribute in today’s model than they would make. With no VHS rental future to look forward to, it falls to Prime to get these movies out there.

They could be awful, they could be fun, and who really cares? If we don’t like it then another one will be along in a minute. It really is like the 80’s!

Heads of State is an action-comedy that puts Idris Elba and John Cena together for the first time since The Suicide Squad. Here, amazingly, they play UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Elba) and U.S. President Will Derringer (Cena). With a central concept like that, it falls into the “so stupid it might just work!” category.

They have a very public rivalry that jeopardizes the “special relationship” between the UK and the US, but when they become the targets of a powerful and ruthless foreign adversary, they are begrudgingly forced to rely on the only two people they can really trust: each other.

They must go on the run and find a way to work together long enough to thwart a global conspiracy that threatens the entire free world. They are assisted in their adventure by brilliant MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas).

You know what to expect. You know exactly what you are going to get. Your expectations are low, yet it somehow calls out to you like that unseen movie on the shelf of Ahmed’s gas station/convenience store/VHS rental emporium in the 1980s. You can’t help it. You are powerless to resist.

Peter Safran and Jack Richard produce. Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry, Nobody) directs from a script by Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query.

Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid, Stephen Root, Sarah Niles, Richard Coyle, and Paddy Considine co-star in Heads Of State which will be available to stream on July 2nd.
