Ahhhh the internet. Remember all the rock ’em, sock ’em movie-based internet punch-ups of the past? If you were a fan of the Star Wars prequels, it was simply verboten for you to like The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. If you had love in your heart for The Matrix then you simply had to swear off The Terminator franchise for all eternity. No grey areas. No nuance. The internet demands you MUST PICK A SIDE! So it appears to be with Superman.

Ever since the footage from the CinemaCon sneak peek appeared online, it seems the internet has also been taking sides. So much so that even The Hollywood Reporter has noticed.

In case you haven’t seen the footage yet, the video showed an extended version of the scene from the teaser featuring an injured Superman crash-landing in the Arctic, to be assisted by his dog and then some Kryptonian robots at the Fortress Of Solitude.

Quite clearly, this all represents a massive shift from the tone of the Snyderverse and the last incarnation of the DCEU. The new movie appears to be much more colorful and light-hearted than the previous take.

Is this Gunn taking a risk, or simply leaning into some comics for inspiration?

The online reaction seems to be split down the middle between fans who want a Superman who is more impervious and god-like, or one that’s more human and vulnerable. And do they want a Superman movie that takes the material deathly seriously or one that isn’t afraid to have light-hearted moments?

Here is a sample that the trade gathered from online:

Against

“The real Superman doesn’t need a bunch of robots to carry him over to a table to heal…and doesn’t whine like a little bitch when the sun hits him.”

“Snyder’s Superman literally took a nuke at point blank range and healed from the sun without feeling any pain from its radiation, which is accurate in the Comics. Gunn’s mediocre interpretation is screaming in agony.”

“James Gunn gets it, they said. He won’t make it a stupid comedy, they said. They said he understood the assignment. That was the worst Superman clip I have ever seen. It’s an utter joke and it’s all about Krypto.”

For

“How in the name of hell can anyone not like this preview? I’m convinced some people just like to rage hate. This looks so ‘Superman’ it’s insane.”

“By far, far and away, the best part of this trailer is that there is ZERO cynicism, zero moral grayness, zero self loathing, zero sense that Superman is a ‘vigilante.’ It’s a romantic, idealistic, innocent vision which is pure awesome.”

“Love the design of Fortress of Solitude and the giant double doors with the House of El symbol that lights up. We have Krypto, Kelex and the other service robots. This is very silver age and all star superman and I fuckin’ love it!”

“The dog being a rambunctious little shit jumping all over you at the worst possible time is incredibly relatable. Also, good lord, everything about the Fortress looks great. This movie is Superman as fuck.”
