With the news coming out of Amazon that things are kicking into high gear on whatever comes next in the world of 007, information and speculation about the new Bond adventure is starting to come thick and fast.
A lot of focus is turning to who might be chosen to direct this new installment of the long-running franchise. One name keeps on coming back again and again.
Alfonso Cuaron was offered the directing gig on Quantum Of Solace. The Children of Men, Gravity, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director turned it down, but he did appear in the movie as a Bolivian helicopter pilot alongside his friend, Guillermo del Toro, who had a voice-only cameo.
He has spoken of his desire to direct a Bond movie, and now that his friend and former collaborator David Heyman is tipped to be part of a producing duo running things at Amazon, his name keeps being linked.
Scooper Matt Belloni said on The Town podcast that Cuaron is interested, and has already met with Amazon to talk about his “take” on the character and how to move forward with a new iteration.
Writers are being hired for Bond 26, and meetings with representatives for potential lead actors are said to be underway, but the director will have a lot of say in all of this so locking down the director lets a lot of the other pieces fall into place.
Amazon isn’t waiting, and another long-term target Christopher Nolan is set and locked on The Odyssey. Nolan famously won’t work on more than one movie at a time, refusing to be involved in pre-production on a project while still finishing another. This means his diary won’t work for the pace Amazon wants to work at here. The Odyssey won’t be finished for more than a year.
Cuaron is a decorated director, with four Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and seven BAFTA Awards. His Harry Potter entry is still regarded as the best of the franchise and he has shown he can handle scope, action, and budget in the rest of his filmography.
This could be a good result for Amazon if this comes off.
