There was much fanfare when the Russo Bros, all-conquering heroes of the MCU, were announced to be returning to the world of Marvel superheroes. After a period where the MCU seemed to have lost its way a little, it all seemed like good news. The guys behind The Winter Soldier and Infinity War would sort things out, right?
Well, it turns out Marvel is getting a little nervous. According to a tweet from online scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Kevin Feige is getting worried after seeing reactions to The Electric State on Netflix.
The super-mega-uber budgeted adaption, the latest Russo Bros. project, is currently sitting on Metacritic as the worst-reviewed movie of the year. Rotten Tomatoes isn’t much better, with just a critic score of just 15%. It does, however, have an audience score of 71%.
Have they lost their touch? Or, looking at Citadel, and The Gray Man, did they ever really have one? Will their usual collaborators at Marvel help them do something special?
Speaking of frequent collaborators, in an interview with Omelete to promote The Electric State, Joe Russo said the returning Robert Downey Jr. tried to talk them into coming back to the MCU, but even he couldn’t persuade them until one of their usual Marvel writing partners told them his idea:
“Robert tried to talk us into doing [Doomsday and Secret Wars] and we said ‘no’. We just didn’t have a story. We didn’t have a way in. We were resistant for a while. One day, Stephen McFeely, one of our chief collaborators, said, ‘I have an idea.’ We went, ‘That’s the story!’ That story has to be told; it’s a really powerful story!”
The rumors also seem to indicate that this version of Doom is not a Stark variant in the film, just one that bears a close resemblance to the deceased Avenger, and this, in itself, causes complications for the heroes.
The crew of Avengers: Doomsday is assembling in the UK right now.
