You can’t keep a good man down, and it looks like Jason Bourne won’t stay down. After five movies, it looks like the franchise is up for sale.

Universal has owned the rights to Jason Bourne for more than two decades. Recently, the rights have reverted back to Robert Ludlum’s estate, the original author. It looks like companies like Skydance, Netflix, and Apple are all considering purchasing the rights.

The fifth movie, Jason Bourne, made more than $400 million at the global box office. Doug Liman directed the original movie, in 2002, with Paul Greengrass directing numbers 2, 3, and 5.

Tony Gilroy wrote the screenplays and directed the 4th movie. The same Gilroy that is behind Andor, the second season of which is due out on streaming very soon.

The Bourne Identity, the original movie starring Matt Damon, came out in 2002. Then there was The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), and The Bourne Legacy (2012), with the last movie in 2016.

Altogether the franchise has made in the region of $1.6 billion, so there is money still to be made. However, even Damon thinks the character is dragging it out a bit. After the 5th outing, he said:

“This last one didn’t do as well as the one we did 10 years ago, so maybe people are done with the character. I think everybody is leaving the door open, as we did at the end of this movie, in hopes that we can come up with an intriguing story for the next one.”

If the main star of the franchise thinks it’s getting a little worn down, it’s probably best to leave it. There is no news if Damon will be back, this is modern Hollywood, and Bourne will probably be recast as Lizzo.
