Following its seemingly accidental early reveal yesterday, Marvel Studios has now confirmed with EW that “The Punisher” will be getting his own one-off ‘Special Presentation’ for the Disney+ service.
Like “Werewolf by Night” and “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” before this, the project will be a standalone special which will see Jon Bernthal reprising his role from the prior Netflix “The Punisher” and “Daredevil” series.
According to the publication, Bernthal isn’t just starring in the new Special Presentation, he’s also writing the script alongside filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green (“We Own This City”).
Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, says:
“It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It’s so exciting. Bernthal is a generational actor.
He’s incredible what he brings to all the roles he plays, but particularly Frank Castle. And he’s a great writer. He knows the character inside and out…. Also, I love Punisher, but I love Jon’s Punisher in particular.
The idea that he’s in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, especially the more grounded street-level stuff, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever.
Bernthal will first return to the role for the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again” which releases over the next two months starting on March 4th. In fact, the story idea for the one-off reportedly came while filming ‘Born Again’.
