One of last year’s biggest disasters on the cinematic front had to be “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 dark drama. While the original became an Oscar-winning billion-dollar blockbuster, the sequel… did not.
Finishing its run with widely negative reviews and only a little over $207 million in worldwide box-office, the jukebox musical film was widely seen as a trainwreck for all involved.
That includes singer Lady Gaga, who starred as a version of Harley Quinn in the film. Gaga has often received high praise for her work on television and film before this, “Joker” seen as a rare misfire for her.
Yet she’s taking the hit and accepting of the fact these things happen. Asked about the film’s failure by Elle, she says:
“People just sometimes don’t like some things. It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.”
It’s estimated the movie’s overall box-office has lost the studio around as much as $125–200 million.
The film was recently nominated for seven awards at the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor and Worst Actress.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is available to watch now on Max.
