Following Allison Janney’s joining the cast as Vice President Grace Penn, fellow “The West Wing” alum Bradley Whitford has signed on for Netflix’s acclaimed series “The Diplomat”.
Whitford will take on a recurring role as the husband of Janney’s character. Grace Penn was introduced in the final two episodes of the second season, and the repercussions of events in those episodes will have a major impact on what’s happening in the third season.
The series was renewed for a third season well before its second season premiere, and it had begun shooting new episodes when Netflix released the second season this past October. It’s hoped the third season will launch sometime before the year is out.
The series has drawn much acclaim, with the recent second season leading to series lead Keri Russell scoring an Emmy nomination. The show and several cast members all scored nominations at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, SAG Awards and Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
Janney played Press Secretary C.J. Cregg, while Whitford played White House Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman in “The West Wing” over the course of seven seasons of “The West Wing”.
Whitford has won three Emmy Awards for his work over the years on shows like “Transparent,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and films like “Get Out” and “Saving Mr. Banks”.
