Oscar-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier (“In a Better World,” “The Night Manager”) is in negations to direct the long-gestating sequel to 1998’s witch and sisterhood-themed “Practical Magic” at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, who starred in the original film, are set to return to their respective roles of witch sisters Gillian and Sally Owens.

The pair have been raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, who are faced with a curse that threatens to prevent them from finding lasting love. The pair must use their magic to destroy the evil spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend before it kills them.

Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, Aidan Quinn, Goran Visnjic, Evan Rachel Wood, Margo Martindale and Mark Feuerstein co-starred. Bier takes over from Griffin Dunne, who helmed the original film.

Bier has worked with both of the film’s leading ladies before – Bullock on Netflix smash “Bird Box,” and Kidman on mini-series “The Undoing” and “The Perfect Couple”.

The original film was considered a minor flop with mixed reviews and $68 million at the box-office. But it has grown into a cult hit as audiences have come to appreciate its often wild tonal shifts that blend crime procedural and domestic abuse drama elements with lighter rom-com conventions and supernatural fantasy.

Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original, is returning to write the screenplay, while Bullock and Kidman are producing with Denise Di Novi.
