“Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” the sequel to 2018’s hyper-macho “Heat” wannabe action thriller “Den of Thieves,” opened on Friday and topped the box office over the weekend.
Domestically the film pulled in a strong $15 million in its debut domestic weekend – coming in slightly ahead of expectations and riding a wave of reviews that were actually mildly positive – a big improvment over the first film’s mixed reaction.
That Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. -led first film was a modest theatrical hit, taking in $80 million off a $30 million budget, but the film really found its audience in the home video market where it became a cult success and built a fanbase.
Director Christian Gudegast, who helmed both films, tells THR that he is not only already talking about a third film, he’s actually made much more progress on it than you might expect.
He tells the trade: “It’s already pitched. It’s already done. We’re ready to go. We’re feeling very good about it.” That suggests the film could be filming before year’s end depending upon schedules.
That would mark a change from the second one which actually was ready to go in 2020 until the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and other financial issues stalled things until filming finally began in April 2023 in the Canary Island.
