Oscar nominated actor Jude Law has confirmed that he will play Russian president Vladimir Putin in the new political thriller feature “The Wizard of the Kremlin”.
French filmmaker Olivier Assayas (“Clouds of Sils Maria,” “Irma Vep”) is helming this adaptation of Giuliano da Empoli’s 2022 debut novel and co-wrote the script with Emmanuel Carrère.
Speaking about his role with Deadline, Law says he hasn’t started prep on that yet and finds the prospect daunting:
“I say that hesitatingly because I haven’t really started work on it yet. I mean, I have, but at the moment it looks like an Everest to climb, so I’m in the foothills looking up thinking, ’Oh Christ, what have I said?’ That’s often how I feel whilst I say yes. I was going, ’Oh God, how am I going to do this?’ But anyway, that’s for me to sort out.”
The film follows the enigmatic Vadim ‘The Tsar’ Baranov, a TV producer before becoming a political advisor who helped the rise of Vladimir Putin.
After his resignation from this position, legends about him multiply until one night when he tells his story.
He reveals a Russian state with sycophants and oligarchs in open warfare, and Vadim a master spin doctor wanting to get out as he learns of the increasingly dark secrets of the regime.
Alicia Vikander, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Zach Galifianakis, and Tom Sturridge co-star while Olivier Delbosc produces. The film hasn’t begun production yet.
