Nicholas Galitzine could be about to have a very big couple of years. After years trapped in development hell, it looks as if Masters Of The Universe really will come back to the big screen in live-action form for the first time since Dolph Lundgren in a cod-piece from 1987.
Amazon MGM is providing the cash. Travis Knight (Bumblebee) is directing, and a decent cast is building that includes Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Duncan, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops.
Galitzine will take on the twin role of Prince Adam/He-Man in the movie. Already there have been some images leaked that show him clearly bulking up and growing out that mullet ready to play the role.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, as reported by Dark Horizons, Galitzine talked about how much of the various iterations of the characters and stories he had watched as part of his preparation for the role:
“I have, yeah. Look, what I will say is our version is quite different from the original animation, which we all agree was camp within its own right and worked so well for the time.
But there’s been a couple of iterations, obviously since there was the ‘Revelation’ version of Master of the Universe, and the comics themselves. And we’re very much treating our script as as Bible, you know.
But it’s kind of amazing to hear what this show meant to a lot of people. It was really formative for a lot of people, so it’s exciting to do something that will have a nostalgia element as well as hopefully attract a bunch of new fans.”
So it sounds like the high camp of the original cartoon, which could only really be captured in a 1980s Flash Gordon movie style, is very much not the route they will be going down. Tone was always going to be the part of this that was hard to get right.
Masters Of The Universe will be on screens in the summer of 2026.
