A few days ago came the news that the just released “Kraven the Hunter” movie marks the end of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe screen plans.
The film sees the “Spider-Man adjacent” films like “Venom,” “Moribus” and “Madame Web” all finished following disastrous critical reception and often poor sales.
Now Variety has done a feature piece in regards to the films which had references to Spider-Man, but never really included him in any significant way. They confirm these spin-off movies are being put on hold:
“The looming box office failure [of Kraven the Hunter] almost certainly signifies the end of this endeavour at the studio which one knowledgeable insider at Sony imputed to an industry-wide ‘irrational exuberance about superheroes’ that has ultimately led to the overall diminishment of the genre’s primacy as the leading force at the box office.”
The piece indicates the box-office success of the first “Venom” led to the false impression by the studio that audiences would rush to see a movie about any Spider-Man character without Spider-Man in the film.
One source claims Disney’s deal with Sony never stopped the latter from being able to include Spider-Man in these spin-off films – they just chose not too:
“There was a feeling within the studio that audiences would not accept Holland’s Spidey suddenly popping up in a live-action film that wasn’t a part of the MCU, especially after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and the Marvel Studios projects ‘Loki’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ established definitive boundaries to the Marvel multiverse.”
They also say Sony is aware these films failed and aim to be more “discerning” about future projects.
