A few weeks ago we shared the news that DC Studios was looking at a Clayface movie… seriously. Well, it has now officially finished looking and has greenlit the project. It is a love-action feature film with the Batman villain at the centre of it.

Variety says that genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting on Hill House) took the project to James Gunn and Peter Safran, who liked the pitch. It is described in reports as a tragedy-laced horror/thriller.

The first Clayface was Basil Karlo, who appeared in Detective Comics #40 (June 1940) and was a B-list actor who began a life of crime using the identity of a villain he had portrayed in a horror film. The character only appeared twice in the Golden Age.

In the late 1950s, Batman began facing a series of more science fiction-inspired foes. One of these was Matthew Hagen, a treasure hunter given vast shapeshifting powers and resiliency by exposure to a pool of radioactive protoplasm, who became the second Clayface.

If this story is a horror/thriller with a hint of tragedy, then this second approach would feel more fitting.

Flanagan has a new The Exorcist film and the Carrie series for Amazon on his schedule, so the report says he won’t be directing, but they already have a director in mind. We presume this will be part of the DCU, and not an Elseworlds project, but this is not confirmed.

Clayface most recently appeared in Creature Commandos.
