Universal Pictures has begun development of a fourth film in the “Meet the Parents” franchise and it’s moving quickly.

The core four cast members of Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner are all in early talks to return for the next film with story details for it under wraps.

The original film centers on the awkward and tension-filled dynamics between male nurse Greg Focker (Stiller) and his intimidating, ex-CIA father-in-law, Jack Byrnes (De Niro). Critically acclaimed, it made $330 million worldwide.

Other cast in the past have included Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as Greg’s parents and Owen Wilson as Pam’s ex-boyfriend Kevin – but it’s not yet clear whether they’ll return.

John Hamburg – who co-wrote all three prior films in the franchise – is set to write the screenplay. No director has yet been attached, but the first two film’s helmer Jay Roach will be back to produce.

Jane Rosenthal and De Niro are also set to produce. The total franchise so far has grossed over $1.13 billion.
