With James Gunn’s “Creature Commandos” now out on Max to a so far positive response, the first groundwork has been laid for the DC Universe which will continue with Gunn’s “Superman” next year.
The DC Studios co-chief this week spoke with Happy Sad Confused to discuss the new show and the future, and in the process touched upon his past – namely his time working with Marvel on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films.
He said he would’ve turned down running Marvel Studios if Kevin Feige left and he were ever offered the job, and then goes on to say he was offered the job of running DC Studios for quite a long time before he agreed to it.
That agreement came only after Warners came up with the idea of Peter Safran serving as co-chief – Gunn could then handle the creative oversight while Safran handled all the more routine company running aspects.
Gunn then went on to spoke about projects that didn’t happen at Marvel, saying he wanted to do “Guardians” spin-offs including a TV series about “The Ravagers” and a film or TV series focused on Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord:
“There are so many [‘Guardians’ projects I would have liked to explore]. The ‘Ravagers’ show, I thought that could be a fun thing. ‘The Legendary Star-Lord,’ honestly, frankly, we had a whole idea for that.”
Gunn also really wanted to do a “Rocket and Groot” project which ultimately morphed into “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” instead:
“And then ‘Rocket And Groot’ – to be honest, ‘Rocket and Groot’ is what ‘Guardians 3’ was. I wanted to do ‘Rocket and Groot’ first, but and then I was talked into doing ‘Guardians 3’ instead of ‘Rocket and Groot,’ and that’s kind of – because I knew I needed to tell Rocket’s story.”
He adds he’s “excited for them to go do whatever they want” with “Guardians” and hopes Marvel will do more stories with those characters.
As for future DC projects, he gave a quick update on titles saying some titles are happening with the “Supergirl” film, “Lanterns” series and another project greenlit last week which he can’t talk about (speculation is either “The Authority” or “Swamp Thing” films, or “Paradise Lost” series).
Others however are still in development and won’t move forward until their scripts are ready – three he confirms are “Booster Gold,” “Waller” and “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”.
