Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” was a costly production, the film coming in on a production budget of $250 million and a marketing/P&A spend said to be just over $100 million.
That means the film has to roughly earn over $600-700 million at the global box-office to break even theatrically. At present, after two weekends domestically and three internationally, the film now stands at $320 million worldwide.
Last week, Puck News’ Scott Mendelson indicated that the sequel is tracking to end up with a gross of around or under $450 million worldwide – if so the film would be long way from breaking even, but strong VOD and streaming would likely take it into the black.
Going by these financials, there’s obvious doubt over Scott doing a third film but the director indicated at a press conference just before the U.S. opening that he intends to continue forward and try to convince Paramount to greenlight one.
He says (via Mama’s Geeky): “Given the performance in the rest of the world we’ve seen yesterday, there’s certainly going to be a Gladiator III.”
No word on what a potential third film will be about, Scott previously indicating in interviews he’s already begun the writing process of the film with over a dozen pages already written.
