By Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. character makes his debut in next week’s animated “Creature Commandos” series premiere, and he’s a face and voice you’ll be seeing a lot more of in the next few months and years.
The character is confirmed to be appearing in both James Gunn’s “Superman” film and the second season of “Peacemaker” on Max with the character tied to A.R.G.U.S. in some way.
It’s not a shock he would be. His son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) died at the hands of John Cena’s Chris Smith during Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” film and that death is expected to carry over here into this new universe.
Talking to Games Radar, Grillo spoke more about the nature of his role and revealed he’s essentially stepping in as the replacement for Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) as the leader of A.R.G.U.S.:
“In Creature Commandos, I got the uniform., I got the yellow shirt and the hair, and, you know, he’s really part of that world. And then in Superman and even more so in Peacemaker, I take over for Viola Davis in what she was the leader of A.R.G.U.S.
So now I become almost an administrator. I’m wearing a suit. I go from being boots on the ground badass to now being in charge, which enables me then to find out the truth about my son because now I can see things that I couldn’t see before. And, it just makes my passion for revenge even stronger.”
Revenge will be the key motivator for Flag Sr. and will be a big part of the scenes where he and Chris Smith encounter each other:
“It really is. [Revenge] doesn’t go without me. I still understand the capacity of which I have to serve this world. It’s a big responsibility, and so I have to be careful so that it doesn’t go too far, which has been fun as an actor to kind of balance that thing. John Cena and I have a pretty serious epic scene that culminates with all this anger.”
It’s also likely this won’t be the last of Rick Flag Sr. who could well appear in the “Waller” TV series which is in the works.
“Creature Commandos” premieres on Max on December 5th, “Superman” arrives July 11th 2025 in cinemas, and “Peacemaker” S2 is expected to release late next year.
