David Corenswet makes his debut as Superman in James Gunn’s “Superman” next Summer and with it comes a new Supersuit with a quite different style than before.
Going by set photos, it seems to adopt bright colors reminiscent of the Christopher Reeve era. On the other it has sculpted design more akin to the Henry Cavill supersuit.
In costume tests for “Man of Steel,” Cavill and others tested using the Christopher Reeve Superman suit. With Gunn’s film though, those who made it to the costume tests used the Cavill suit from “Man of Steel”.
One person who got close was “Grantchester” actor Tom Brittney who was up for the role alongside Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, with the latter ending up taking on the Lex Luthor villain role in the film.
Brittney recently discussed his audition on the Hellish podcast and says the testing led to a bit of a wardrobe malfunction:
“It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman suit – it was his actual suit. It takes about half an hour to get into it – to get sewn into it. And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it. I was more muscular than Henry Cavill, that’s the only reason.”
Gunn subsequently confirmed this on Threads, adding that Corenswet’s test ended up effectively destroying the suits:
“Tom messed it up and then Corenswet came in [and] he was way too tall so it just got torn to shreds… [It] was an original that wasn’t in the best shape to begin with.”
Gunn went on to praise Brittney, saying he was: “truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy.” “Superman” opens in cinemas July 11th 2025.
