Back in February came a report in the trades indicating that filmmaker Tim Burton was readying a reimagining of 1958 cult sci-fi indie film “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman” at Warner Bros. Pictures.
“Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn was also linked as writing the script for the feature. Now though, Burton has seemingly downplayed those reports in an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival.
Talking about what he’s up to now following the success of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” he says he has nothing on the cards right now. He adds that even if he does has something in development, he’s been burned too many times to talk about it:
“I have no real projects at the moment. One thing I learned very early on is that until I’m on the set doing something I don’t know if I’m doing it. I’ve had projects, I was doing a Superman once, I did another project that I worked for a year upon, and it didn’t happen. When those things happen, it’s quite traumatic, it’s quite emotional. So, I’m very protective of myself.
In Hollywood, when you’re doing something, you may think you’re doing something, until they tell you you’re not doing something. You get quite traumatized by those situations, so I wait until I’m on the set, and then I will tell you, ‘Yes’, because I’m actually doing it. But before then, I don’t know.”
Allison Hayes starred in the original “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman” as a wealthy heiress whose close encounter with an alien triggers her to grow into a giantess. This makes things complicated for her marriage which is already in jeopardy due to a philandering husband.
HBO did do a remake of the property in 1993 which had Daryl Hannah starring and Christopher Guest directing.
