The second and final season of Netflix’s “League of Legends”-inspired animated series “Arcane” is now out in full and, though not as universally well-received as the first season, it’s still proven to be highly acclaimed.

It’s also quite costly it seems with Riot Games reportedly spending around $250 million to produce both seasons – meaning each episode cost just around $13.8 million to produce.

That makes it the most expensive animated show in history. To put that in perspective with other costly TV, “The Mandalorian” came in only a little more expensive at $15 million per episode, while HBO’s “The Last of Us” came in cheaper around $10 million per episode.

Why was it so expensive? The show’s executive music producer Alex Seaver spoke with Screen Rant recently and explained why the animated series cost so much:

“The show is made by Riot Games, which is, I think, one of the reasons it took a long time to make. There’s all these articles about how expensive it was, it is because we are not a film and television studio, we’re a game company. But I think it’s also the reason that in some respects this broke a video game adaptation curse, or whatever people say, is because these people care the most about the game. They made it.”

The series garnered much praise for the show’s visual style, characters and writing. With the second season now complete, questions linger over what’s next.

The creators of the show have hinted at spin-offs already with key regions within the games like Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia all expected to be explored (via Twitch). One show is actively progressing and having already been in development for a year. Several other spin-off series are also in development as well.
