The journey to the screen of a fourth Captain America movie appears to not be a happy one. Just over three months away from release, and a report says Captain America: Brave New World is once again heading back to reshoot town. While reshoots are a fact of movie-making life, this late and yet another set being ordered is usually a harbinger of doom.
Scooper DanielRPK (via Dark Horizons) dropped the news that a third round of test screenings for the film recently took place, and still, the audience was not happy. Following this, Marvel has already started more reshoots and star Anthony Mackie has been seen shooting new scenes in LA.
Captain America: Brave New World underwent an extensive development process with what seemed like several runs at the script. Then the main shoot ran from March to June 2023. There was a famously extensive round of reshoots and new scenes filmed this summer. They also added a new villain in the form of Giancarlo Esposito at this point.
Esposito also confirmed that more was to be shot. With such a short timeframe, any VFX shots are likely to be an urgent tasking to hit that deadline.
The movie was always a curious choice for Marvel as it seems like a fight they can’t win across several vectors. Part of the audience will be against a new Captain America who isn’t Steve Rogers from the start. Marvel could try to veer towards a Winter Soldier-style paranoid thriller to harness the most successful Cap outing to date, and in the process, they then disappoint another subset of the audience who expected more of a romp.
Meanwhile, another slice of the audience might have expectations of a Black Panther-style event. This means Marvel can’t possibly get close to pleasing everyone. There is a lesson here, if they are smart enough to learn it.
Harrison Ford takes over the role of Thunderbolt Ross from the late William Hurt and the character is now US President.
Captain America: Brave New World lands in cinemas on Valentine’s Day 2025.
