The arrival of musical “Wicked” easily cast a spell over the box-office on Thursday night, the title raking in a total of $19.2 million in preview screenings.
The total comes from a $2.5 million haul on Monday from Amazon Prime screenings, advanced screenings on Wednesday taking in $5.7 million, and finally the proper Thursday preview night grossing $11 million.
The film is well on its way to a $120 million+ domestic opening weekend, though it’s unclear how much of a drop will take place from Friday to Saturday which will tell how well this goes beyond the fanbase.
The biggest opening a feature musical is Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action “The Lion King” at $191.7 million. For a film based on a Broadway musical, it’s “Mamma Mia”at $27.7 million.
Coming in second will be Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” which snagged $6.5 million in Thursday night previews – putting it on par with other tentpoles opening in the $55-62 million range such as “No Time to Die” and “Bad Boys for Life”.
Both films are rating very good with audiences so far, though CinemaScores for both films aren’t out yet.
