Acclaimed actor Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” “The BFG”) is reportedly at the very top of the casting wishlist for the new HBO “Harry Potter” series.
Variety broke the news, saying Rylance is said to be in the mix to take on the role of Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore.
The trade indicates Warner Bros. Television hasn’t yet entered into negotiations with the actor – but they have reportedly reached out to see if he’s available and interested.
HBO was asked about the report, and told the trade: “We appreciate that such a high profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
It’s expected the leads for the show will be newcomers as a casting call for kids aged between 9 and 11 took place earlier this Fall.
The adult cast though will likely include some famed UK actors, but the challenge there will be cast having to commit to potentially seven seasons.
