BlastofSilencejj here again with my 31 Chills of Halloween. It’s been fun discovering and rediscovering movies, TV shows, magazines, music, and YouTube videos. Here are 16-20 on my list.
16. Twilight Zone: Nightmare At 20,000 Feet (1963) – Director: Richard Donner
I had to revisit this classic episode of the Twilight Zone. Richard Donner is an all-time favorite of mine. He and star William Shatner get a whole lot of heavy lifting done here in under 30 minutes. A man traveling aboard an airplane with his wife and recovering from a recent mental breakdown thinks he sees a gremlin on the wing. Great stuff.
17. The Sadness (2021) – Director: Rob Jabbaz
Absolute mayhem. It’s all been child’s play up until now. This is about as extreme as you want to get. The Sadness is a Taiwanese horror film directed by Canadian filmmaker Rob Jabbaz. A young couple tries to reunite during the spreading of a virus that attacks the limbic region of the brain turning the infected into bloodthirsty lunatics.
It’s a well-made, award-winning film but it is pure exploitation and gruesome. Jabbaz does have a few things to say about the government and people in general. A nasty piece of business. Beware. Shudder is steaming it. It also has a really nice 4k release. Free on Dailymotion as well.
18. Deadpit Radio – YouTube
Switching gears. Deadpit Radio, is the original horror podcast! Uncle Bill and The Creepy Kentuckian aren’t your typical Good Ole boys, Boz! These guys know horror movies from front to back. They do cool horror movie-themed shows where they have tier lists ranking zombie movies to Friday the 13th characters. They talk about Eurocult films, slashers, and anything you want to know about Blu-rays and 4k releases. All with a humorous tongue-in-cheek relatable approach. They should have more listeners. Find their YouTube channel to watch them. You can also listen on Spotify or the Amazon music app.
19. You’re Next (2011) – Director: Adam Wingard
Animal-masked intruders attempt to break into a wealthy family’s rural vacation home. You’re Next is a horror/comedy film that was made for only a million dollars. Wingard works wonders with the budget. Gory kills and carnage throughout. And one of the funniest on-screen deaths ever. Razor-sharp piano wire and running full speed do not go well together. See it on Netflix.
20. Silver Bullet (1985) – Director: Dan Attias
Based on the Stephen King horror novella Cycle of the Werewolf, Silver Bullet is a fun 80’s werewolf movie. Corey Haim’s Marty is a wheelchair-bound but determined kid who has a close call with a werewolf one night.
He and his sister try to convince their reluctant uncle Red (Gary Busey) to help them take it out. 80’s era Gary Busy is an absolute treasure to behold. He’s great at this. Busey’s Uncle Red is like a lot of heroes of the era. He’s in over his head but giving it his best. Red has also customized nephew Marty’s wheelchair for him and he will need plenty of speed. AMC channel all month long.
