As we reported as far back as last year, there is more Bourne on the way. The original entry, The Bourne Identity, was a great beneficiary of word of mouth and did massive numbers on home rental.
The second and third instalments were massive hits, but the continuation attempt starring Jeremy Renner – The Bourne Legacy – fell flat. The fifth installment featuring the return of Bourne himself, seemed anachronistic, potentially proving that the Bourne movies were a product of their time, and that time was over. This was further compounded by the failure of streaming show Treadstone, intended to build out the universe.
Well, this won’t stop them. It now looks like All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger might make the new Bourne movie his next project.
Industry scheduling bible Production Weekly lists Berger as officially signed on to write and direct the project, with the title of The Bourne Dilemma. Matt Damon is expected to return, but was said to be waiting for the finished script before confirming.
The Bourne movies have now veered quite significantly away from the original novels on which they were based.
The character originally featured in three novels by Ludlum, released between 1980 and 1990, followed by eleven novels written by Eric Van Lustbader between 2004 and 2019, and three novels by Brian Freeman since 2020.
The original story involved the hunt for Carlos The Jackal weaved into the shadowy world of CIA plots and betrayals.
The movies have taken nearly $1.7 billion at the box office in total so far.
