British TV director James Hawes, who most recently directed a bunch of episodes of Apple TV+ series “Slow Horses,” is set to helm the first two episodes of HBO’s “Lanterns” series.
The project has a straight-to-series order at HBO and follows two intergalactic cops known as Green Lanterns who are drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Kyle Chandler stars as Hal Jordan, a legend amongst the Lanterns as he reluctantly mentors a younger Green Lantern named John Stewart. Screen tests for Stewart are underway now with Aaron Pierre and Stephan James both uup for the part.
The eight-episode season will reportedly boast a dark and gritty “True Detective” vibe. Hawes’ TV work also includes “The Alienist,” “Penny Dreadful,” “Snowpiercer,” “Black Mirror” and “The Mist” series. He also directed the Anthony Hopkins film “One Life”.
Chris Mundy (“True Detective: Night Country”) is serving as showrunner and executive producer and will write the series with Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and comic book writer Tom King.
