It was almost two years ago now that it was announced that “The Hunger Games” alum Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt of Rivia for a fourth season of Netflix’s “The Witcher”.
Cavill had revealed he was exiting the role a few days earlier, and since the casting there’s been a lot of criticism, curiosity and questions about where the franchise is going.
Talk heated up again back in April this year when Netflix announced the series would come to an end with the show’s fifth season. At the time there were also rumors the seasons would be shot back-to-back.
Today, Hemsworth commented on taking on the role during an interview on Live with Kelly and Mark and cleared up the production timetable for the series. He started off the interview talking about a brief location shoot he did in Wales:
“I’ve been shooting a show called “The Witcher” for the past nine months. We were there [in Wales] for two weeks. And the first week was beautiful sunshine, blue skies. And then the second week was kind of like tornado season.”
Later in the interview, he revealed he had moved to London in late January to begin work on the show’s fourth season (which began actual filming in April) and he has three more weeks of filming to do after this week.
Then the actors all go on a break for four months, during which time he’ll go back home to Australia. Then he’ll come back to the UK next year for another eight months which will presumably be for the show’s fifth and final season.
The gap between the end of filming and the airing of a season in the past has been around 8-9 months which would suggest late Summer/early Fall debuts in 2025 and 2026 for the final two seasons if the pattern holds.
He also revealed that he hadn’t seen the TV series or read the books before he was cast, but he was a big fan of “The Witcher 3” video game and was keen to be a part of that world:
“I hadn’t seen the TV show. And I hadn’t read the books. But I played the video game like ten years ago or something. And it’s still to this day one of the best video games of all time. Netflix came to me almost two years ago now and said that they wanted me to just step in and take over.
I was really excited by taking on that character because I was a fan of the video game. But I said, you know, let me watch the TV show and have a look at the books and really get stuck into it.
The actor most recently starred in the thriller “Land of Bad” and will next be seen opposite Laura Dern in “Lonely Planet” dropping next week on Netflix.
