Disney’s contentious “Star Wars” streaming show “The Acolyte” reportedly surpassed its planned production budget according to a new feature in Forbes.
The series was shot in the UK, and so documentation about its budget is disclosed publicly after a certain point. The outlet indicates that the costs of the series. up until part way through post-production, have been revealed.
The result is the show’s budget hit $230.1 million (£172.7 million) at that time, around $50 million more than had previously been reported. That figure raises the per-episode cost to around $28.8 million which would be around the fifth most expensive show to date behind “Rings of Power,” “Citadel,” “Secret Invasion” and “Stranger Things” S4.
As the published figures were also up to only partway through post, the final figure is likely higher. The series began production in October 2022, and prior to that Disney was forecasting for it to come in on budget.
That it appears to have had gone over, combined with soft audience numbers, were likely bigrfactors leading to the show’s cancellation – likely more so than the hostile online reception.
The series launched to 4.8 million views on launch day and made it to sixth place in Nielsen’s Top 10 originals chart for its third episode, but fell out of the Top 10 after that as the online backlash surged with complaints about its quality and diversity.
