By DreamWorks and Universal’s “The Wild Robot” is proving to be not just a critical smash but a commercial hit as well.
The animated film has been posting stellar review scores – sitting at 98% both in critics and audience polls on Rotten Tomatoes, and landing an A CinemaScore from audience exit polls.
Now, it’s also on track to open at the top spot at the box-office with an opening of around $35 million – ahead of tracking estimates.
It’s faring much better than “Transformers One” which debuted to a lower than expected $25 million last weekend and has now plunged a steep 63% to $9 million and third place in its second weekend.
Second place is “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” which continues its remarkable hold with a drop of just 37% in its fourth weekend for a further $16.3 million to bring its total to $250.3 million. By Monday that film will overtake 1989’s “Batman” to become Burton’s second highest grossing domestic film behind only the live-action “Alice in Wonderland”.
Francis Ford Coppola’s $120 million-budget self-financed “Megalopolis” is tanking, the film debuting in sixth place with just $4.1 million. Critics reviews have been incredibly divided, but audiences are outright rejecting the film with a D+ Cinemascore.
Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” is opening in select cinemas today, the first part of a platform release, with the film garnering a $51,000 per-screen average – the second highest of the year behind only “Kinds of Kindness”.
