After six years in the position, Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jennifer Lee has officially announced that she is stepping down from that role to return to filmmaking full time.
As a result, she will be directing both the upcoming “Frozen 3” and its follow-up “Frozen 4”. Lee wrote the first two “Frozen” films and co-directed them with Chris Buck.
Lee took over the CCO Disney Animation position after John Lasseter left the company in 2018. Lee also wrote the scripts for “Wreck-it Ralph” and “Wish” and has a story credit on “Zootopia” as well as executive producing almost every Disney Animation film of the past decade.
On the third and fourth “Frozen” film, Marc Smith will be serving as co-director with Lee. Smith has a story by credit on “Frozen 2” and reportedly pitched the new films which got the go ahead from Disney. In a statement, Lee writes:
“I admit, I was hooked from the moment Marc first pitched this new adventure for our gang, and I am in awe of the incredible work he has done since then developing this powerful story.
As a studio, we are fairly new to musical sequels, and this will be our first story told over two films at once. I’m excited for the challenge and so grateful for this opportunity to return to filmmaking, and can think of no better way to do so than with our Frozen family.”
Currently nothing is known regarding the story of the next two “Frozen” films. At present the third film is currently slated for release in 2027.
