HBO’s upcoming “Dune: Prophecy” prequel series releases in November with New York Comic Con set to hold interactive experiences, panels, and special screenings related to the series next month.

One of the show’s stars, Emily Watson, recently discussed the series with Total Film and says it will be a more mature series than a certain other sci-fi franchise out there:

“It was very exciting, but also very great to go into that world with the security of knowing I’ve got the skill set to make everything feel real. It’s a very interesting palette because it’s not childish… it’s not like Star Wars. It has a moral complexity, which is interesting.”

Watson plays Valya Harkonnen in the prequel series alongside Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen, Jodhi May as Empress Natalya, and Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino.

The series unfolds 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides. We see two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.

Watson says the Harkonnens are “very recognizably human and complicated”, far less the extreme pale sadists seen in Villeneuve’s films. Even so, she adds they are a “bit of a f—ed-up family.” She goes on to say:

“[The series] is built around the Bene Gesserit order. That’s the sisterhood. That’s one of the central characters in it, and all the universes that they control, and their power… it’s kind of fascinating.”

The work is inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker developed the series which hasn’t locked a specific launch date as yet.
