Famed animation studio LAIKA has confirmed that Oscar-nominated “Dune” screenwriter and “Prometheus” co-writer Jon Spaihts will make his directing debut on a live-action sci-fi thriller for the studio.
Spaihts will also pen the currently untitled film which tells the tale of a woman investigating a mystery that took place during a week she cannot remember.
It marks the third live-action LAIKA project of late. Two others include an action thriller adaptation of John Brownlow’s novel “Seventeen,” and “Crumble” which Brian Duffield will direct from his own script while Phil Lord and Chris Miller are producing.
In a statement, Spaihts says of his new film: “This is an original passion project I’ve been eager to turn to for a while, and I couldn’t ask for better partners. LAIKA has a clear creative vision, and a tradition of meticulous, bespoke storytelling that suits this project very well.”
Spaihts, who also worked on the scripts for “Doctor Strange” and “Passengers,” contributed to the screenplay for next year’s “A Minecraft Movie”.
The news comes as LAIKA’s “Coraline” 15th anniversary re-release has been a resounding success, pulling in $48 million at the global box-office since August 15th.
