A while back came a New York Times report that indicated that both George Clooney and Brad Pitt were getting $35 million each to star in the “Wolfs” film on the Apple TV+ service.
The Jon Watts-directed film screened at the Venice Film Festival today to a five-minute standing ovation. That screening marked one of the few cinema screenings for the film which is otherwise going direct-to-streaming on Apple TV+ at the end of the month.
Speaking at a press conference for the film, Clooney shot down the pay story saying it was considerably less than what was reported. After calling it “an interesting article,” he said:
“Whatever her source was for our salary, it is millions and millions and millions of dollars less than what was reported. And I am only saying that because I think it’s bad for our industry if that’s what people think is the standard bearer for salaries. I think that’s terrible, it’ll make it impossible to make films.”
The response comes a year after Clooney spoke during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that “actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living” and the strikes were an “inflection point”.
“Wolfs” sees the actors playing two competing fixers who are hired to cover up the same high-profile crime and forced to work together as the night starts spiralling out of control.
“Yes, we wanted it to be released [in theaters]. We’ve had some bumps along the way, that happens. When I did The Boys in the Boat, we did it for MGM, and then it ended up being for Amazon and we didn’t get a foreign release at all, which was a surprise.
There are elements of this that we are figuring out. You guys are all in this too. We’re all in this industry and we’re trying to find our way post-COVID and everything else, and so there’s some bumps along the way.”
Clooney also spoke about the film only getting a very limited theatrical release on September 20th, one week before it hits streaming. He says it was a ‘bummer’ and then added:
