While we’ve seen reviews out of the Venice Film Festival, more general critics reviews have arrived for Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and the verdict seems decent.
With 40 reviews counted, the film sits at a 78% (6.3/10) on Rotten Tomatoes with many reviews offering a 3/5 score. On Metacritic with 25 critics reviews counted, it stands at 63/100.
To put that in comparison, the first film racked up an 82% (7.0/10) on RT and a 71/100 on Metacritic so the scores – though notably weaker – aren’t starkly different.
There’s definitely some appreciation of the film there. Time Out says: “Its not Burton at his very best, but like its fiendish antihero, it does the trick”.
Vulture says it “manages to avoid the feeling that its only obligation is to dutifully run through everything familiar one more time” and watching it is a “small but significant relief, like reconnecting with an estranged friend.”
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is currently tracking for an opening suggested to be around $109 million domestically when it opens next weekend.
