Remedy Entertainment is teaming with Annapurna Interactive to create TV and film adaptations of its “Alan Wake” and “Control” franchises.
In addition, adaptations in “other audiovisual formats” are also in the works. As part of the partnership, Annapurna will become co-production and co-financing partner on “Control 2” with funding for it to increase and work on it to continue full steam ahead.
The deal will likely see the resurrection of AMC’s live-action “Alan Wake” TV series which has been stalled in development for years.
That series will be based on the well-reviewed cult hit 2010 video game and its even more lauded sequel. Both 2019’s “Control” and 2023’s “Alan Wake 2” topped multiple Game of the Year lists and were nominees for the Game of the Year award.
Both games are part of a shared universe with elements from both directly crossing over in the games. Remedy’s Creative Director Sam Lake says in a statement:
“I’m absolutely thrilled (yes!) by this opportunity to expand the story of Alan Wake and our whole Remedy Connected Universe to mediums beyond games, and to build all of this in close collaboration, games, film, TV, and other mediums as well, as one unified vision. I trust Annapurna are the perfect partner for us to make this dream come true.”
The first “Alan Wake” game was inspired by “Twin Peaks” and “The X-Files” and follows a best-selling author returning to his small home town in Washington state where he hopes to rid himself of prolonged writer’s block.
What follows is an increasingly surreal and Lovecraftian experience that seems to bring the plot from his last novel – which he has no memory of writing – to life in a town where light becomes a weapon.
The sequel boasts more of a “True Detective” vibe. Meanwhile “Control” unfolds within an institute dealing with alternate dimensions.
Remedy is also working on the four-player cooperative PvE game currently codenamed “Condor” and remakes of the first two “Max Payne” games.
