Filmmaker Ridley Scott is very confident in his upcoming “Gladiator” sequel, so much so he’s calling it his best film ever.
Speaking with Empire as part of a feature issue on “Gladiator II,” Scott put this above “Alien,” “Blade Runner” and the first film with a bold claim before stepping back a little bit to put it in his upper echelon of movies:
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever made…. One of the best things. I’ve made a few good ‘uns… it’s full-bore, brutal action.”
Despite a first trailer torpedoed by an ill-fitting music choice (Jay Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild”), the $300 million budgeted feature has been test screening to very good results according to the trades. Several outlets have even suggested potential awards consideration.
Scott is famously frank about films and generally doesn’t get hyped about his own movies. He made headlines at the “Alien: Romulus” premiere, where he selected one of his own movies (“Blade Runner”) as one of his four favourite films in a poll for Letterboxd.
Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen, Fred Hechinger, Djimon Hounsou and Derek Jacobi star in the film which hits cinemas on November 22nd.
