The last two months have seen a reversal of fortune for the box-office as early Summer flops like “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” have given way to hits like “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Despicable Me 4,” Twisters,” “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “Alien: Romulus”.
Well things are about to get quiet again as the two new openers this weekend – “Blink Twice” and “The Crow” reboot – are both looking to underwhelm according to Variety.
Zoe Kravitz’s twisted thriller “Blink Twice,” formerly known as “P—y Island,” is reportedly tracking for a $7-8 million opening and is buoyed by very good reviews and a cost-effective $20 million budget for the Channing Tatum-led film.
More concerning is “The Crow” reboot which is headed for an opening as low as $6 million though could as high as $9 million. Either way that’s not good for the Bill Skarsgard-led project which cost $50 million to produce.
All will fall behind both “Alien: Romulus” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” which are expected to battle it out for first with both tracking for anywhere in the $16-19 million range. Even “It Ends With Us” will beath the pair as its third weekend is looking to bring in around $10-12 million.
It marks another miss for Lionsgate whose $100 million-budget “Borderlands” has made $18 million worldwide after just two weeks of release – thankfully for the studio they were only handling distribution of the film.
Overall box-office remains 16% behind last year and 28% behind pre-pandemic levels. The release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in early September is expected to give the box-office a boost again.
