The other day, IndieWire released a list of the best 100 films of the 2000s decade with Steven Spielberg’s “A.I.: Artificial Intelligence” coming out on top.
It was a highly contentious list, to say the least, with many complaining about the notable lack of many high-profile titles. As the ranking was done by site staffers as opposed to filmmakers though, it lacked a certain weight.
The outlet has now followed it up by asking over 100 indie filmmakers to list their best films of the 2000s with the likes of Sean Baker, Brady Corbet, Joe Dante, David Lowery, Jennifer Kent, Alex Ross Perry and Jeremy Saulnier among others weighing in.
The results are a whole bunch of lists, but World of Reel has compiled the data into a list of the films most mentioned in those Top 10 lists. The results are interesting:
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – 34 mentions
2. No Country For Old Men – 28
2. Punch-Drunk Love – 28
2. Children of Men – 28
3. Mulholland Drive – 24
4. Zodiac – 21
5. The Dark Knight – 20
6. In the Mood For Love – 19
7. Y Tu Mama Tambien – 17
7. Lost in Translation – 17
8. City of God – 16
9. Spirited Away – 13
10. Yi Yi – 12
10. Oldboy – 12
As pointed out, many of the filmmakers in the list were U.S. indie filmmakers, which would partly explain why ‘Eternal Sunshine’ rated so high.
As the list is essentially 100 Top 10s, there’s almost no films missed. Check out those lists at Indiewire.
