About a half year ago came a report from DCULeaks which suggested that “Black Swan” and “The Wrestler” filmmaker Darren Aronofsky was in talks to direct a film adaptation of the DC Comic “Plastic Man” for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.
Cut to today and a listing on Production Weekly has Aronofsky named as director of “Plastic Man” and adding that the project is in development. Further a source for World of Reel indicates they’re heard about Aronofsky’s potential involvement.
The comics followed Patrick ‘Eel’ O’Brian, a crook who gets doused with a mysterious chemical during a botched heist. He awakens to find himself imbued with the power to shape-shift and stretch his body into almost anything. The character previously had his own cartoon series.
Back in late 2020 came word that Cat Vasko had been hired to pen a gender-swapped version of “Plastic Man” with a female lead. Two years prior to that, Amanda Idoko was hired to pen a comedic action-adventure adaptation set in the 1940s.
Thus it’s not clear what kind of version Aronofsky might pursue. The filmmaker previously dabbled with DC when he was being lined up to helm an R-rated “Batman: Year One” adaptation way back in 2000.
DC chief Gunn himself pitched a “Plastic Man” movie to Warner Bros. Pictures with Matthew Lillard in the role – that version was rejected.
Aronofsky is about to shoot the New York crime thriller “Caught Stealing” starring Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz which Sony will release next year.
Aronofsky’s last film, “The Whale,” was released in 2022 to decent reviews, but it did win Brendan Fraser the Oscar for Best Actor and audiences really liked the film. The A24 produced indie managed to gross $54 million worldwide on a skimp $3 million budget.
