Apple TV+ has premiered more first look photos from its new series “Disclaimer” starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen and directed by Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity,” “Children of Men”).
The series tells the story of respected television documentary journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) who has built a career on revealing the concealed transgressions of long-respected institutions.
One day she receives a mysterious and lurid novel that sets her as the main character and reveals all of her deepest, darkest secrets. As she seeks the writer’s true identity, she must confront her past before it destroys her family and everything she’s built in the present.
Kline plays the vengeful author, Cohen plays Catherine’s husband who is a lawyer, Kodi Smit-McPhee is Catherine’s son, “Squid Game” breakout Hoyeon Jung is Catherine’s hard-working aide, while Lesley Manville and Louis Partridge have roles tied to the mystery of Catherine’s past.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Cuaron dubs it a ‘seven-hour-long movie’ and says the series isn’t so much about contemporary cancel culture as it’s “about the zeal to punish” which has been throughout history:
“I’m sure there’s an evolutionary trait there for why we fall into judgments of other people so easily, especially when those judgments don’t come from informed facts and just come from what other people are talking about, or saying, or claiming.”
Based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Renee Knight, the project was shot over nine months. All seven episodes are written and directed by Cuaron and will premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
“Disclaimer” releases October 11th on the Apple TV+ service.
