Reviews are out for Amazon’s “Batman: Caped Crusader,” the new DC animated series that serves as a spiritual successor to the original 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series”.

JJ. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm produce the series which launches on Thursday and is set in a Gotham City of the 1940s with more grounded takes on the characters.

The result so far? Very positive. On Rotten Tomatoes it sits at a perfect 100% but with a slightly soft 7.3/10 average rating. On Metacritic, it stands at 73/100 which doesn’t put it in the same league as Marvel’s “X-Men ’97” at 82 but still a quite good score.

Here’s a sampling of review quotes:

“With a sleek, simple style and a consistently moody vibe, the Prime Video series feels almost as steady Batman’s broad shoulders. But it rarely soars to the level of spectacular.” – Angie Han, THR

“Caped Crusader promises a moody, noirish thrill ride through a tough, bleak, and forbidding Gotham City via its mostly silent protagonist.” – Jarrod Jones, AV Club

“It is a perfect mix of new and old, old-school stylings with a new-school flair. It’s a mature Saturday morning cartoon for those raised on Batman: The Animated Series.” – EJ Moreno, Flickering Myth

“Despite some of its lulls, Caped Crusader is a beast of an animated series… It’s the kind of novel, ambitious Batman series that doesn’t just satisfy itself by appealing to nostalgia.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Inverse

“This is a tremendous first effort, one that has the potential to be mentioned in the same breath as its legendary forefather should it return for more Gotham escapades in the near future.” – Bradley Russell, Total Film

“This is a return to the very foundations of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s character-defining Batman: The Animated Series — a show that feels like a renewal rather than a retread.” – Kambole Campbell, Empire

“You’ll find fewer operatic origin stories for supervillains here, but in their place are some captivating whodunits and the occasional visitor from worlds beyond.” – Erik Adams, IGN

“Batman: Caped Crusader sees the Dark Knight returning to his roots in a new interpretation that struggles to carve out its own identity.” – Michael Thomas, Collider

“Batman: Caped Crusader” launches on August 1st.
