By Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” looks set to break preview records already.
Deadline reports that the film’s preview night tonight in the U.S. is on track for a $35-40 million haul – a record preview night for an R-rated film.
That’s more than double the previous R-rated preview record held by the second “Deadpool” film in 2018 with $18.6 million. That film went on to a further $34.4 million on its first Friday and a $125.5 million overall for the three-day weekend.
Other Marvel films to take in similar preview numbers include “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ($36M) and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($39M) with those going on to opening weekends of $187M & $258M respectively.
While critics have been mixed/softly positive on the film, audience scores so far have been stellar with a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Just how big the film will go? We’ll have to wait and see.
The news comes on the heels of star Ryan Reynolds revealing on Jimmy Kimmel Live that the title for the film was originally “Deadpool & Friend” and then changed at the very last minute due to fan backlash:
“The movie was originally called Deadpool & Friend. I am actually not joking. On the eve of the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl is where we first launched the trailer for Deadpool & – not Friend, but Wolverine – it leaked because of the son of the b—–s on the internet. The title leaked. We looked at it and listened, and they f—— hated that title. We were not feeling so good about that anymore.”
At that point they called Disney and Marvel saying they needed to change it and had to put their foot down – but it was done.
