Sony Pictures has won the screen auction for “Eruption,” the book based on a partially finished manuscript by the late Michael Crichton and finished off by James Patterson.
In the book, a once-in-a-century volcanic eruption of Hawaii’s Mauna Loa threatens a secret cache of U.S. military chemical weapons that can destroy not only the island but the world.
Crichton was working on the book for years and had large volumes of scientific research, comprehensive notes, detailed outlines and more featured throughout along with plenty of interviews with volcanologists.
The material was given to Patterson to finish into a working novel. Crichton and Patterson between them have combined global book sales around 700 million
Oscar-winning “Free Solo” and “Nyad” directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi are attached to direct and apparently there’s been early discussions with Keanu Reeves to star, but no commitment yet.
Patterson, Chin, Vasarhelyi, Sherri Crichton and Shane Salerno will produce. The novel went out to buyers in early May and has been on the bestseller list since its release last month.
