Matthew Chauncey (“What If…?,” “Ms. Marvel,” “3Below: Tales of Arcadia”) has been set as writer and showrunner of the third season of the acclaimed animated revival “X-Men ’97” for the Disney+ service reports Deadline.
Chauncey succeeds Beau DeMayo who split with Marvel earlier this year just ahead of the show’s first season premiere in March. Specifics of why he exited were never revealed though he simultaneously went silent on social media for a while before returning and supporting the show as it aired.
DeMayo had already effectively completed writing work on the second season of the series before his exit. The trade advises that the scripts for the second season, currently in production, have been revised.
The third season is in development with Chauncey to work with director Jake Castorena on the project. Castorena has been with the project from the start and will remain onboard.
Also staying are Larry Houston and Eric and Julia Lewald, executive producers of the original “X-Men: The Animated Series” who serve as consulting producers here.
“X-Men ’97” serves as a direct follow-up to “X-Men: The Animated Series” from the 1990s. It launched to some of both Marvel and the year’s best reviews, and amassed 4 million views across its first two episodes in just five days. The season finale drew 3.5 million in the same timespan.
