A new report from Jeff Sneider over at The Hot Mic indicates that filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo offered their services to direct the next “Avengers” film but Marvel Studios reportedly turned them down.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy has been the most recent name linked to potentially take the helm of the project, but Sneider says he doesn’t think that will be the case either.
A lot of the issue seems to be surrounding budgets with Marvel desperately trying to control runaway spending.
World of Reel reports that the Julius Onah-directed “Captain America: Brave New World,” which had a budget of $275 million originally, is now in the midst of months of reshoots to the point of “shooting a brand new movie” which has added “anywhere between $75-100 million” to the cost.
After the film received alleged poor test scores and underwhelmed the studio, Matthew Orton was hired to pen additional scenes and material. The new report indicates he “scrapped a big chunk of the screenplay and re-wrote key new scenes” along with adding new characters (such as Giancarlo Esposito’s role).
As for the Russos, they aren’t exactly known for their frugality. Their last released film, “The Gray Man,” came in at a cost of $200 million. The “Citadel” spy thriller series they produced ended up becoming the second most expensive TV series ever made at an average of $50 million per episode.
Then there’s their currently in the works feature “The Electric State” for Netflix with Sneider indicating that he’s heard the budget on that one has blown out to about on par with the new ‘Brave New World’ figure – nearly $370 million.
Whomever is hired, Marvel Studios is aiming to get to work on the next “Avengers” early next year.
