Whilst “Despicable Me 4” will have family audiences in cinemas this coming July 4th holiday weekend, the film many adults seem to want to see will be at home.
Netflix launches the Eddie Murphy-led “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” on Wednesday July 3rd and indications are not only is it going to be a hit, but it may be one of the better-received Netflix action films to date (not the highest bar to clear).
The fourth “Beverly Hills Cop” reportedly test screened to very strong results last year, and now Deadline says that its budget reportedly came in at $150 million – a decent chunk of which is likely Murphy’s salary.
That’s cheaper than “Red Notice” and “The Gray Man” which cost $200 million each, on par with “Heart of Stone” and “6 Underground” at $150 million each, and more expensive than “Triple Frontier” ($115 million), “Day Shift” ($100 million) or “Lift” ($100 million).
Netflix’s most notable action successes to date have been with more mid-budget fare such as “Extraction” ($65 million), “The Old Guard” ($70 million) and “The Mother” ($43 million).
Netflix held an event this week for the film at the resuscitated Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, with social media reaction to the film gushing so far. Reviews are expected to be published closer to the film’s launch on Wednesday.
Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Bacon, Taylour Paige, Judge Reinhold, John Ahston, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot star in the film which was helmed by Mark Molloy.
